Shadow box ring holder redo

Posted by wendy on January 21, 2012 in Tutorials

Recently I made a ring holder from a shadow box frame.  After using it for a week or so, I decided I really didn’t like the design and decided to make it better.

Crafts from the past

Posted by wendy on January 13, 2012 in Tutorials

My family went to a friend’s house for a dinner party tonight and I didn’t have to time to actually make something crafty, so I will show you some of the items I have already made, and some of my favorite “treasures”.

I made both of these jewelry organizers.  And most of the jewelry on them!

I made this earring organizer from a cork board I bought at Hobby Lobby (love those 40% off coupons!)

Use tie/belt holders to hold bracelets and rings

Now I will show you the items that are “treasures” to me, although they may not actually have anything but sentimental value ;)

The gold bracelet with all the different colored stones belonged to my great grandmother and the pearl bracelet belonged to my step-grandmother.

My wrap bracelets

The black earrings are one of my favorite pairs and I found them at King Dollar!

My great grandmother’s watch, Bulova circa 1962.  still works and I wear it every day.  I have another that doesn’t work and am trying to get it repaired.

A cocktail ring that belonged to my grandmother who died last year.

Vintage Christmas tree earrings that belonged to my great grandmother/

Angel pins that an old boyfriend’s step mother gave me when I was in the hospital after a bad car accident.

One of my favorite rings ever, and it got smashed at work during college.

No worries, I found a replacement ;)

My high school class ring.  Yes, that is a peace sign engraved in the stone.  LOL, I was such a hippy.  It even has “hippie chic” engraved inside the band.

My “Joan Holloway” pen necklace I bought for my Halloween costume.  I wear this thing all the time.  Its convenient to always have a pen handy!

The necklace I made from my mother and father’s wedding bands.

A necklace my uncle Keith made for me.

And finally a necklace my friend Betsy made for me in high school.

Show me some of your favorite treasures!

I found a cute little shadow box frame in the clearance section of Michael’s and turned it into a place to store my rings.

Deco Chic earrings and bracelet

Posted by wendy on January 11, 2012 in Tutorials

I recently bought this at Michael’s to make into a bracelet.

Deco Chic bracelet

Today I found these in the scrap booking section and they matched my bracelet perfectly! So, I knew they had to become earrings, somehow…

Scrapbooking brads soon to become earrings

So this is what I did:

Scrapbooking brad and earring wire

and then…

Open the brad and place it in the loop of the earring wire

and then…

Twist the brad prongs across the earring loop and press them down flat.

and then…

Now you have some earrings to match your bracelet!

Super easy, super cheap rings

Posted by wendy on January 10, 2012 in Uncategorized

I love jewelry. I make a LOT of jewelry. Tonight I made these rings in less than one hour.

Rings I made tonight

The back row were made from buttons, the middle row were scrapbooking brads, and the front row first three on the left were old earrings.  The one on the right was a pendant.

DIY Light Scoop Tutorial

Posted by wendy on January 4, 2012 in Camera, DIY, Tutorials

My camera is a Canon Rebel and these instructions are made based on my camera. If your camera is different, you will have to do some adjusting.

So here is how I did it:

Required supplies:

  • very strong glue (I used 6 minute epoxy)
  • sharp scissors
  • tape
  • utility knife
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • mirror sheet (I found mine in the automotive section of Wal*Mart)
  • Wendymonster’s DIY Lightscoop pattern (pattern shown is not the one linked here)
  • black construction paper
  • your camera
  • bulldog clips or clothes pins

Optional supplies:

  • laminator
  • lamination sheets
  • truck bed liner spray (again, found in automotive section of Wal*Mart – link is for Amazon)

Cut out the pattern using the black construction paper on the bold black lines. (I used white paper as my example because it was easier to see AND I used the optional cut lines in this image):

After cutting out the pattern, fold on all of the fold lines. Put the pattern onto your camera’s pop up flash to see if it will fit. You will have to do some adjusting. Use the utility knife to gently cut away the paper around your pop up flash until the pattern can fit snugly, but can be easily removed.

Next, I laminated my paper to give it added strength. This is purely optional. I am just an OCD crafting freak that likes any opportunity to laminate something. If you are not using the truck bed liner spray on your finished light scoop you can continue on with this step. If you do laminate your pattern, you will have to use the utility knife to cut the excess off as close to the edges as possible.

If you are using the spray, you will need to mount the mirror last, after the spray has dried over night.

Get the mirror sheet and cut out a small square that is 2 3/4″ x 2 3/4″.

Use your very strong glue to glue the mirror cut out to the pattern.Use the clips to hold it into place until the glue dries.

IF you laminated your paper, you will need to use the sandpaper or nail file to roughen the lamination so that the mirror will adhere.

After you have gotten the pattern to fit snugly, make sure that all the bottom edges are sealed shut with your tape. Tape both the inside and the outside of the newly formed light scoop. NOTE: Be sure to use small pieces of tape as you go, the smaller the better. You want the taped edges to be completely smooth and adhered to the pattern.

IF you are not laminating your pattern, be sure to reinforce all edges with tape. You can trim the excess with your utility knife. (Remember that you are making this with black construction paper, so you won’t see any of these lines.)

You want to be sure that the small tab is reinforced with several layers of tape, because the light scoop is mounted by this tab in the hot shoe.

If you use the truck bed liner spray, do so after all the edges are sealed with the tape. Use small, quick sprays. Let it dry over night.

Here is what the front of my lightscoop looks like mounted on my camera:

Here is a close up of the truck bedliner spray on my lightscoop. I highly recommend using the spray, because it is very forgiving and will hide your tape pieces. It does make the lightscoop look more professional than just using a piece of laminated construction paper taped together ;)

Here is a view of the lightscoop from behind where you can see the mounted mirror.

** yes, we magically went back to the future to take some of these photos. Thanks for noticing that my batteries died ;)
